FASHION | Friday Style Envy: Emmanuelle Alt

FASHIONLauren CaronComment

I have this slight fear of people asking me such questions as: who is your style icon, who is your favorite artist, what is your favorite source for inspiration, or what is your favorite book, band, or city, etc. Because I don't really have a one favorite anything, especially something that has stood the test of time. Maybe it's because I am still developing my innerself or that I can't restrict my tastes to be defined by one factor.  I love many things and have several favorites in each category. As I've mentioned before, I'm not a minimalist. So much so, that I collect favorites too.

I have tried to narrow my fashion icons list down, and recently came to a realization that there is one style icon that I find to be near the top of my list. Emmanuelle Alt's sense of style is something I can relate to with my current lifestyle of a casual, professional, living in NYC, and her signature silhouettes really work on my body.

Alt is the editor-in-chief at Vogue France. She has a very distinct style that centers around casual, sexy and cool. There seem to be boundaries around her style characteristics, that she never really crosses or moves too far from.

Recently, when I'm thinking about buying an article of clothing, I'll ask myself, "Could I see Emmanuelle wear this?" If the answer is no, then I won't buy it. If yes, than that's another story. One thing she has that I don't, is the budget for designer and high end pieces, so I have to pick and choose my statement pieces and find the rest within my price range. But the good thing about the original question is that it's keeping my spending down, and pushing me to buy less.

Let me break down her essentials list and add some options at a price point that I and hopefully my readers can afford. If she's not someone that you relate to fashionably, I would suggest that you do some soul searching and find your muse for your own personal style. It's helpful to have a direction and one that's visual is even better. I've pinned my most favorite looks of hers and others (like the Olsen twins) onto a Pinterest board called "My Style" you can find that [here].

BLAZER - ZARA | FEDORA - & OTHER STORIESWOVEN BELT - ASOS | JEANS - UNIQLO | T-SHIRT - JCREW |MARC BY MARC WATCH - JACOB TIME | BOOTS - STUARTWEITZMAN | MANOLO BLAHNIK PUMPS - NEIMAN MARCUS

Alt has wardrobe staples that she can mix and match easily as the color scheme is minimal and pairs well together. At times she'll wear a pop of color - but only in the form of a tee shirt or sweater (something that's easy to layer in with her investment pieces). You can tell she invests in her accessories and outerwear. Often she'll wear a leather jacket or leather pants. Her most "dressed up" looks involve tapered trousers, with a button front blouse or silk tee, however the styling always remains the same - Narrow pants, loose tops, fitted Jackets and heels. If she wears a large coat, it will most likely be belted. On warmer days you will hardly ever see her bare arms, most often she wears a loosely fitted button-down with a great pair of white jeans. And on days that she's doing a lot of walking, her heels are lower kitten heels. She doesn't wear much jewelry, at least from what I can see. She does always have the classic, square-faced, black, leather strap, watch on. It looks like a classic luxury timepiece, which I'm sure was an investment or a gift. She often is seen wearing another classic, aviator style sunglasses. Lastly, I've only seen one handbag (probably because she never needs to), she mostly only has her phone and a show invite in hand. The handbag was black leather, fringe - I think YSL.

What she says of jeans...

So there you have it, one of my favorite style muses. I have others, but she's a very close first. I would say I have a slightly more feminine aesthetic, as I do love jewelry and will wear a dress or skirt once in a while. I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has any favorite muses, if so what are they? I'd love to know how you try to emulate their style as well. If you have one, feel free to link your "my style" Pinterest board in the comments.

Post Fashion Week Wish List: for an NYC Gal

TRENDLauren CaronComment

Living in New York I'm surrounded by fashionable people everyday, especially during the fall when all anyone talks about is NYFW. Each year, to keep up with the rest, I gather a wish list of my must haves to get me through the season. This year is seems to be a collection of classics. I don't know what's in the air but I'm loving dots, stripes and black & white with pops of red.

Unlike many of my peers I'm actually happy that New York Fashion Week has ended. Unfortunately, being in the visual industry I don't get to reap the benefits of the fashion world like others do. Fashion week to me means several weeks of major installations and stress both before and during. Not only do I have to ensure my floors are looking gorgeous for the crowds of fashionistas entering the store, but I also have to work on my Holiday Loft during the time. It's tiresome and I spend the entire week in less than chic outfits and unpainted nails because for the most part I'm doing manual labor.

There are benefits to working so closely to the fashion world however. I get to see and hear about the latest trends and looks that are walking down the runways. I also manage to get just as excited about shopping as the rest of them. With that said, there are few things that I'm surely going to spend a little $$$ on this season, as well as other pieces that I will make the quick trip to Forever 21 for. To keep things short and sweet, below are the pieces that I'm putting on my wish list for this fall. And yes, in my opinion, they're very New York.

  1.  "Leather" Moto Leggings - Zara $49.90
  2. A pop of red, ballet flats - Dolce Vita, Amazon from $23.50
  3. A chic satchel - Madewell $268
  4. Fit and flare dress - Nordstrom, Felicity & Coco $88
  5. A smoking blazer - Helmut Lang $595
  6. City chic moto booties - Sigerson Morrison $595
  7. Camo skinny jeans - Madewell - $135
  8. An overcoat with an oversized lapel - Zara $159
  9. A polka dot blouse - Anthropologie $88

Oscars Fashion, 2013: My Favorites

TRENDLauren Caron2 Comments

Last night for the 85th Annual Oscars the Red Carpet brought the glamour as it is usually does but I found myself loving the column style dresses the most. Reminiscent of old Hollywood, many of the actresses dressed in gowns that sparkled and shimmered with jewels and sequins while others stood out in rich jewel toned pieces. Hair and makeup also reflected this era with the large waves and strong side parts or the softly pulled back chignons.

I must say I'm more drawn to these looks probably because they're very similar to the look that I am doing at my wedding. Think Veronica Lake, Rita Hayworth and Lauren Bacall.

Jessica Castain was my favorite of the evening, glowing in this Armani Prive gown with Harry Winston jewels and Christian Louboutin heels. She said she chose it because, "It's a very 'Happy Birthday Mr. President.' It reminds me of old Hollywood glamour."

Reese Witherspoon is my runner up, she was so gorgeous in this cobalt blue gown by Louis Vuitton. The jewels were Louis Vuitton as well. Her hair was the best accessory to the outfit with the gorgeous old Hollywood waves, which she attributes to just giving birth?! I have to admit, she did look fuller than usual but I had no idea it was because she just gave birth! She looks amazing!

Stacy Keilbler is also among my favorite top three, she's so stunning in this gown by Naeem Khan and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. I absolutely love the lines of the gown, doesn't it look like Art Deco architecture?

Other beautiful stars that were on my favorites list are:

Amanda Seyfried in an Alexander McQueen gown, Roger Vivier shoes, and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Naomi Watts is wore an Armani Prive dress, Jimmy Choo shoes, Roger Vivier bag, and Neil Lane jewels.

Charlize Theron is wore a Christian Dior Haute Couture dress, Roger Vivier shoes, and Harry Winston jewelry.

Jennifer Lawrence who one Best Actress (congrats) wore a Dior Haute Couture dress, Chopard jewels, a Roger Vivier clutch, and Brian Atwood shoes.

Zoe Saldana in an Alexis Mabille Couture dress, Neil Lane jewelry, Roger Vivier shoes, and a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch.
