Next month Sotheby's will auction the Property from the Collection of Mrs. Paul Mellon, a collection of works and furnishing collected by Rachel Lambert Mellon, better known as Bunny Mellon. She lived to be 103 and in that lifetime was the matriarch of American dynasty, who according to the New York Times fortunes and art holdings rivaled the Fricks, Carnegies and Morgans. Proceeds from the sales will benefit The Gerard B. Lambert Foundation, a charity established by Mrs. Mellon in memory of her father. The Foundation is in support of horticultural and educational endeavors.
Included in the auctions are works ranging from 17th-century still lifes through to masterpieces of the 20th century. Masterworks by Rothko, Richard Diebenkorn’s, Ambrosius Bosschaert, and other works by American Artists Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keeffe and Edward Hopper are up for sale. Rothko's Untitled (Yellow, Orange, Yellow, Light Orange) from 1955, belongs to a year in the artist's career that is considered the most pivotal moment. Of the 22 created in this year, 13 reside in prestigious museum collections.
Two other sales, include are jewels and objects of vertu as well as furniture, porcelain, and decorative objects from the Mellon residences in the United States and abroad. Her residence in Upperville Virginia, Oak Spring Farm is also currently for sale for $70 million. Looking at the photos of the stables and pastures that was home to the family's prized racehorses has left me drooling and imagining the life I could have on that farm.
Not being at liberty to wave my paddle at the auction, I am still looking forward to the exhibition previews at Sotheby’sthe exhibit will be displayed on all 10 floors and surely to impress and enlighten. She was an impressive collector who amassed works and objects from a breadth of styles and periods - effortlessly combining them. Truly inspiring.
